The Immanuel Outreach Committee has designated the third Sunday of every month as “Stella Sunday”, and receive donations of food for Stella’s Sunday afternoon programming. Donations of high protein canned meats and beans, cheez whiz, jams, peanut butter, crackers, juice boxes, baby food, baby supplies and also cookies and buns would be greatly appreciated. The Outreach Committee will make sure these items get to Northend Stella. The next “Stella Sunday” is May 20th. Please help out if you can.

Campaign to Ban Landmines: On February 15, 2012, the Convention on Cluster Munitions was tabled in the House of Commons, and Canada must pass domestic legislation in order for this important disarmament treaty to be passed. The majority of cluster munitions victims are civilians, and among those civilians, a large number are children. However, the Campaign to Ban Landmines is concerned that Canada’s legislation will be watered down in order to appease the United States. If Canada passes weak legislation, it will put our country in a position in which it could be complicit, if not directly responsible, for more civilian death and suffering from the use of this indiscriminate and inhumane weapon. The Immanuel Outreach Committee is asking you to consider contacting your Member of Parliament to express your concern. Postcards and form letters for this purpose are available in the Amen Corner.

New Phone Directories are available, please contact Sharon in the office. The cost of printing was $2.50, so donations would be appreciated. Please note on the front cover the website address should read immanuelunitedchurch.net .

May Newsletter Submissions are due by Tuesday, May 15th. Please email them to iuchurch or bring in to the office.

Annual Congregational Meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 16th at 7pm. Please plan to attend.

Update re: Donations made In Memory of Neva Nicholls: Over the last several months, the Immanuel congregation received numerous donations made in memory of Neva Nicholls, and earmarked for outreach/justice work. Because Neva’s grandson Donald Stewart is an active participant the Sunday School community, the Outreach Committee decided that it would be important to involve the Sunday School in the decision about the dispersal of these funds. The current Sunday School teachers, Scott Douglas and Nanette McKay, worked through a decision-making process with the children, and the two not-for-profit agencies that the children chose to support with these funds are UNICEF and Doctors without Borders. $250 will be sent to each of these agencies in memory of Neva Nicholls. Thank you to Donald and the Sunday School for this thoughtful decision that will make a difference in the lives of many children. Decisions about the dispersal of the remainder of the funds donated in Neva’s memory will be made at a later date.

The Annual Meeting of the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario will take place at the University of Winnipeg from May 31-June 3, 2012. Your gift of hospitality will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
