a welcoming, affirming, justice-seeking congregation

United Church Hymnody:After choosing the hymns for this morning’s service, I noticed that all of them were written by Canadians, and all were written or co-written by United Church ministers. “River Run Deep” was co-written by Gordon Light, now an Anglican Bishop, and Ian Macdonald, who was a ministry student at Immanuel many years ago. The words to “We Are One” were written by Doreen Lankshear-Smith, who lives in Cambrian Presbytery in this Conference, while the music was written by two other ministers, Jeeva Sam and David Kai. The Offering Dedication, “What Can I Do,” was written by Paul Rumbolt, a Newfoundlander currently serving a church in Calgary. And finally, the words to “All Who Hunger” and “For the Faithful Who Have Answered” were written by Sylvia Dunstan, considered one of the great North American hymn writers of the late twentieth century. Sylvia served the church as a congregational minister and prison chaplain, and died in 1993 at the age of 38. It seems appropriate on this All Saints’ Day to remember Sylvia as one of the faithful who have answered. –Nancy
