What Do You Imagine In This Space?

In This Space I Imagine

Immanuel is considering options for developing the space directly behind the church (which we sometimes refer to as the “back 40”).  Should we sell it? Should we develop it ourselves? Should we partner with some other organization? Should we leave it as it is? What would benefit the church? What would benefit the community? These are all questions we’re just beginning to explore.

We’d like to know what people from the community, passers-by, and members of the congregation think. We’ve set up a chalk board for people to record their thoughts, OR you can leave a comment below to add your voice to the mix. So let us know: What do you imagine in this space?

There have been a lot of intriguing and creative suggestions left on our chalkboard.  It’s clearly engaged the community.  Some people have also phoned the church with their thoughts.  One person even left a sketch of her vision of the space:

1. outdoor classroom, 3ft high. 2. planters with mosquito-deferent plants. 3. seating. 4. checkers/chess tables with seats. 5. motion lights. 6. mini-library where people donate or borrow a book/leave a book.

There was even a nice article about our community consultation in the local Herald newspaper.

  1. Some ideas that people have already left on the chalkboard:
    – Park or garden and with swings
    – Spiral ramp
    – Garden and/or park! With picnic benches and rain shelters and stuff. I’d love to help keep it up, by the way.
    – Garden and/or park. Benches and tables.
    – Mini public water park please. With slides. And a nice shady eating space.
    – Flower garden and /or community garden

  2. More ideas from the chalkboard:
    – Fence it for an off-leash dog park
    – Affordable housing
    – Splash park
    – Leave it – this looks nice
    – Community Garden – but leave the trees
    – Milk shake shop for teens
    – Giant chess/checker board
    – Picnic tables
    – (a picture of children playing ball on the grass) “Hello People, #1 – Give me the space.”
    – Play structure
    – Benches
    – Hate God
    – Flower gardens – NO dogs!

We periodically record contributions to the board and then wipe it to make room for more ideas.

  3. Even more stuff from the chalkboard:
    – Starbucks
    – Swings
    – Children’s play place
    – Community garden
    – Farmer’s market
    – Community orchard
    – Greek theatre (Ooh, I like that one!)
    – Picnic shelter
    – Cat cafe
    – Food cafe
    – Gwars skate park

  4. More from the board:
    – Keep as is
    – Parking for your members
    – Keep it as green space.
    – Children’s splash pad
    – Gym space
    – Have a great park
    – Summer garden plots
    – A dog park
    – Food
    – Sell it
    – Sky Zone

  5. If the church congregation is shrinking to the point of being unable to adequately sustain itself, a Multi-family development that would meet and enhance the community needs may be a solution. Please contact me for more discussion.

I had left a drawing inside a sheet protector, hope you guys got it. It was about an outdoor class room, chess /checker tables. I see someone wrote they wanted a Greek theatre. The back of the garage would make a nice movie wall or a stage for summer plays or music shows. Great area for community events. Lynda

    • Yes, Lynda, I think we got that one. It looked very cool. I hope to scan it and pop it up on the website.

      • I’ve added a scan of Lynda’s drawings above. Her suggestion is for “A place for learning, gathering, having fun, whether you’re young, old, punk or whatever. A neighbourhood place to be, meet, and have fun.”
